KINNESSBURN REUNION NEWS

DECEMBER 1999: ISSUE NO. 10

MERRY CHRISTMAS
and a
HAPPY NEW YEAR

Biggar window

The stained glass window in Biggar Kirk (Upper Clydesdale) shows St Andrew at lower left and at right Bishop Wishart. This is presumably Bishop Robert Wishart of Glasgow (early c14th) rather than Bishop William Wishart of St Andrews (1271-9), but either way Dr DAVID WISHART (who's into Wishart family history) should be pleased. Biggar was the final Collegiate Church to be built (1547) in Scotland before the reformation.

Despite a marquee dinner dance being such a brilliant idea, voting was 2 in favour and 3 against, one of the three being the Senate, which gave the whole thing the definite "thumbs-down" -- ah, well! as the poet says "The best laid schemes of mice and men gang aft agley" and this one's definitely ganged.

BILL ALLAN came over from down under during the summer, and he and 'ARCH' ANDREWS determined to see the eclipse. They accordingly crossed the Channel to Cherbourg where they were able  to observe French clouds instead of the English ones!

Friends of the late JOHN STEWART will be pleased to read that his name is contained in the Roll of Honour of those who died in the service of their country (he was on VSO) and is read out each year at Liddesdale Parish Church in his native village of Newcastleton in Roxburghshire.

PHIL WHEELER failed by a mere 49 votes to be elected onto Edinburgh City Council this May. No doubt he will try again, and we wish him all the best.

St Andrews achieved the ultimate accolade (at least in the eyes of the world's philatelists) when an artist's impression of the Cathedral featured on the GPO's 44p Christmas stamp. We couldn't afford a free issue all round, let alone have them franked "St  Andrews" (which seems now to be part of the "Edinburgh & Fife" postal area) but some of you lucky overseas readers may get one on the envelope!
